Senior Spotlight- Noah Swanson
By: John Langer
Noah
Swanson was born on February 17th, 1995. After high school Noah plans to attend
Iowa State University and major in computer science. After earning his bachelor's
degree he plans to get a job in the video game industry.
Noah
enjoyed his time at Central City Schools. When he came to Central City in 6th
grade, he immediately started making friends. When he went into high school, his
best friend was Taylor Welter. His favorite memories at Central City include
"those wonderful bygone days of recess in 6th grade," said Noah. He
also enjoyed band.
One of his favorite memories in band was
the day Mr. Gasman, the band director five years ago, was trying to get the
band to balance and had the band hold hands. "A band that touches
together, plays together," said Mr. Gasman. Noah thought that was very
funny.
He learned to play the baritone in band
and read music very well. Noah's most difficult decision was deciding what
Kirkwood Academy to go to, CISCO or Arts and Sciences. He chose Arts and Sciences.
He
would like to tell his fellow underclassmen to stay focused and don't
procrastinate. If they want to accomplish this task, they must not go to a site
named Reddit.com. Noah explained, "If you don't want to get any work done,
visit that site. It always has new stuff."

Senior Interview: Promise Wright
By: Matt Knudsen
She
was born on August 8th, 1995. Promise's plan for after high school is to go to
college and get a job that pays really well. She is not quite sure what she
wants to be, but it's okay, she has plenty of time to figure it out.
Looking
back on her high school career, her most memorable moment was winning
Homecoming Queen. Although she enjoys hanging out with her friends at school,
however, she doesn’t enjoy waking up early or having homework. Honestly, most
kids don't. Her advice for underclassmen is, "Do homework, don't get
behind on classes or credits. It's okay to have fun but do work son."
Promise
says her hardest decision is picking where to go to college. Since she isn't
exactly sure what she want to be when she grows up, and there are so many good
colleges out there.
Senior Interview: Brennan Silver
By: Alison Hickey
After
high school, Brennan plans on going to Kirkwood for a year in order to get her
associate’s degree then transfer to the University of Iowa to get her
bachelor’s degree in business.
The
things Brennan has enjoyed during high school were going to football games,
bonfires, cheering at wrestling tournaments, and girls’ nights with her
friends.
The
advice Brennan is willing to give underclassmen is, "Don't procrastinate, it will always bite
you in the end, and cherish your high school years. They are seriously over
before you know it!"
Brennan says this about how well she enjoyed
high school," I love high school!
It's the only time you can go out and go places on your own, get a
taste for being an adult, but you still have your parents taking
care of you."
Brennan claims the most difficult decision she
has made in high school was, "Whether
to finish my associate’s degree at Kirkwood, and then transfer to Iowa, or go
straight to University instead."
Senior Interview: Adam Krog
By: Katie Sackett
This
week’s senior spotlight is Adam Krog. He was born, February 22nd,
1995. After high school he plans
to go to college for welding. After he graduates college he wishes to go on and
find a carrier in welding. Adam’s favorite class during high school was welding
since he wants to do that after high school.
When
asked who his favorite teacher was in high school he replied, “Mr. Pangburn because
I learned a lot from him.” When asked what his least favorite class was he
said, “Health class because of the fake babies.”
Adam
has participated in several things outside of school. He usually worked on cars
and welded. His most memorable moment from high school was when he blew up his
first car. When asked if he enjoyed high school, he said, “Yes and no, there
are days that I enjoy it and days that I don’t.”
Adam
said, “My advice to underclassmen is to listen to your teachers!” If he could
go back to his first year of high school and start it all over again he would
like to apply himself a little more.
Senior
Spotlight: Miranda “Randi” Tumilty
By:
John Langer
Randi Tumilty was born on
September 10, 1995, and is seventeen years of age. Her most memorable moment at
Central City High School was dancing behind the curtains with Amy, a 2012
graduated senior, during the Central City Drama Department's performance of Little
Women. She had most fun with her friends during theater.
Her most difficult decision in
high school is deciding where she is going to college; she is still undecided.
She plans to go to college for a degree in English or Psychology. Randi will be
happy when she leaves high school because she will be free of immaturity and
students that do not care about their studies; she finds these students
annoying. "People like me don't get as much out of high school because we
have to wait for everyone else," said Randi.
Her advice to all underclassmen
would be to take their studies seriously. She wants them to have fun, but don't
disregard their education unless they want to work at Wal-Mart or McDonald's
for the rest of their life. "High school goes fast for some, but there are
those like me who are glad it's almost over."
Senior Spotlight: Katelyn Marie Russell
By: John Langer
Katelyn Marie Russell was born on
April 3, 1995. After high school she plans to take a year off of school and
live in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she will get a job in order to save up money for
college. She is unsure what she wants to study in college. Her overall high school
experience was a good one. She loved all of her teachers. Courtney Bortle, a
high school science teacher, and Jamie Smith, a high school English teacher, tied
for her favorite teachers. Both teachers pushed her to be successful and were
down to Earth. Katelyn was able to make better connections with her teachers
than her peers.
Katelyn's favorite memory was during her
freshman year. Courtney Bortle unintentionally let snakes escape from her
classroom overnight. The next day, one of them was found by a group of girls in
a nearby classroom. "There was a huge commotion in the hallway; it was a
good memory,” explained Katelyn.
If Katelyn could go back, she would
try harder (study more) to get a 4.0 every year. She regrets not taking another
Kirkwood course her senior year, but was afraid to return after a traumatic
experience her junior year. When asked about the experience Katelyn had no
comment.
She would like to give some advice to the
underclassmen at Central City High School.
"Get
as many classes as you can done before your senior year. It will give you time
to fill out scholarships and prepare for the ACT. Getting things done will give
you much more free time!"
Senior Interview: Kolton Novak
By: Tom Alatalo
Kolton
David Novak was born on March 2, 1995. His parents are Roxanne and Dave Novak. He
has one sister, Katie. After high school, Kolton plans on going to a two-year
community college. After attending a community college, he plans to transfer to
UNI. He hasn’t decided on a major yet.
Kolton's
best memory of high school was his junior year when he got straight A's the entire
second semester. On the flip side, one of the most difficult decisions he has
had to make was finishing high school.
When asked
who his favorite teacher was he replied, "Mrs. Sliger because she was
really friendly and helped me with my work when I needed it.” Kolton's advice
to the under classmen, "Do not screw around, it may seem like a good idea
at the time, but do your work. It truly pays off in the end.”
Senior Interview
By:
Katie Sackett
This
week's senior interview is Chauvoni Cooke. Chauvoni was born November 22. When
asked what her plans are after high school she replied, "My plans after
high school are to experience life to the fullest and live joyfully! I plan on
going to college, studying abroad, traveling, and singing my heart out until my
last breathe!" Chauvoni's most favorite memory of high school was when she
realized that in her study hall at Kirkwood she had great friends.
Chauvoni
had some tough decisions to make outside of her school career. The one that she
remembers the most was when she went against her parents’ wishes and decided to
come to Central City. "I never expected to come to Iowa and when the
opportunity arrived to finish high school I jumped right on it because I didn't
think I would finish. It's one of the best decisions I ever made," says
Cooke.
While
looking back, Chauvoni has had a lot of embarrassing moments. For example,
forgetting her computer, making a mess at lunch, tripping in the hall, and
talking in her sleep on the bus ride over to Kirkwood.
Chauvoni
Cooke really believes that she is ready for life outside of high school. She
has had to grow up in a huge family. She has already been homeless before and
had to sell her painting just to get by. She believes that with all of her
experiences she is ready for life outside of high school. With all of that, she
had one last thing to say for the underclassmen, "Give yourself permission
to just be yourself. Sometimes it seems that so many kids are insecure about
themselves, so they start judging others because they feel they are being
judged first. So, take a moment to realize what is cool and unique about you
and acknowledge what someone else has to bring to the table. Be yourself,
because everyone else is taken."
