Basketball and Wrestling Update
By: Jeff McGovern
Basketball
The Central City Wildcats have had five consecutive home games. The first again was against a pretty tough team, Starmont. The Wildcats came out of the game empty handed despite a run in the 4th quarter losing 50-59. The girls’ team lost 40-18. Although they played a lot better than the score shows.
The Wildcats then hosted Waterloo Christian. The girls had a great game! They had a phenomenal defense. They held Waterloo Christian to just 24 points with a final score of 41-24. The boys’ team did just as good. Scoring was a strong suit for the boys in this game. Chad Griggs led the team in scoring with 21 points, Dylan Berg was right behind him with 17 points and 7 rebounds, and David Mosher with 15. The team ended the night with a score of 74-58.

Wrestling
The Central City wrestling squad headed to Starmont on Friday. The boys came out victorious against Ed-Co winning their 1st dual meet of the year. The boys then went to Clear Creek Amana on Saturday. They had a pretty successful day there too. Colton Viesek and Seth Schlotterbeck both got 1st place, Ashton Van Alst got 3rd place, AJ Lucas got 4th place.

Basketball has officially kicked off for the Central City Wildcats. Practice started November 5th for the girls’ basketball team. They have been practicing hard and figuring out a position for everyone. Friday, November 16th, the girls had a Jamboree at North-Linn. The girls’ coach, Coach Ratliff, had this to say, "I was pleasantly surprised with the Jamboree. All problems I saw were fixable."
When asked about how he thinks the year will go, Ratliff replied, "We will see improvement from last year. Younger kids have been thrown in the mix, they've done good, and the starters did good at the Jamboree."

Football played their hearts out Friday, October 12th, against Preston. Preston was 6-1 before Friday, now they are 7-1. Central City, 1-5 before the game, played alongside Preston the entire game. Preston was favored to win by 65 points. The final score of the game was 64-39 Preston. Central City scored the first touchdown in the game and lead for the first five minutes of the first quarter. "We haven't had that great of a year, but I know we are all working hard, and are looking to get a win this week against Elgin. I'm going to miss playing here at Central City because we aren't just a team, we are a family." -Knudsen

Football and Volleyball Review

On Friday, September 28, the Central City Wildcats took on Lansing Kee. Lansing Kee had previously lost only one game this season. Kee scored 49 points before the first half was over. The wildcats though put up a fight in the second half. The defense was the highlight of the night for the Wildcats. In the second half, Matt Knudsen managed the Wildcats’ only turnover with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The rest of the game was three and out for Lansing Kee.
Senior linebacker, Skyler Matthias, who had 5 solo tackles and 13 total tackles, led the Wildcats’ with his excellent defense. Seniors, Dylan Berg, Brandon Stevens added with 6 total tackles.  Offensively the Wildcats struggled a bit. Junior, David Mosher, completed 8 of 17 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. Sophomore, Seth Schlotterbeck, had 3 receptions for 40 yards and one touchdown.  The Wildcats play Cedar Valley Christian for Homecoming and they are looking for a victory.

The Central City Volleyball Team had 2 games last week. On September 27, the ladies traveled to Alburnett. Central City put up a great fight against Alburnett; however, they lost the first 2 sets, but were not going away quietly. They won the next game, making the next set tough on Alburnett. Central City lost the game, but the team had great team spirit. September 28, the Wildcats took on the Springville Orioles at Central City. The Orioles and the Wildcats fought hard, the Orioles barely won because the Wildcats put up a tough fight.

Time to Play: Football and Volleyball

'We Believe' is football's motto for this season. Football has a new coach this year as well as a new technique on how the team works together and plays. Football had a bye week during September 10th - September 14. The team is currently 0-4 and looking for their first win. They have been training extra hard this week for their upcoming game, which is against Springville, a rivalry known as the Tractor Bowl. Last year Central City lost it for the first time since going to 8-man.
Volleyball had a tough opponent match up this week. Coming from a win against Cedar Valley Christian, the volleyball team was looking for another winning game against Ed-Co (Edgewood-Colesburg). Unfortunately they did not win against Ed-Co, but it did not dampen their spirits for their next game against Monticello. Practicing hard for the game, Central City went to Monticello hoping for a good game and a win. It was a good game, and all the sets were really close (within a few points of each other), but Monticello won the last set, and the game. I talked to one of the players to see if they had anything to say about the team or games so far this year,
"It's been a rough start, but I know we will pull through and get some wins this week and finish the season strong," said Sam Nielsen.
